Your excellency, dear colleagues
Sabah Al Her,
Some have already described the EuroAfrica Interconnector as the most important interconnector of the 21st century.
What makes it so important? Is it because this submarine cable will be one of the longest in the world? Is it because it will reach depths that are 2000 meters? Or is it due to its ambition to transmit an unprecedented power of 2000 MW?
Yes all of the above are significant. But they are mere technical feats. Nothing would be possible without the commitment and support of our three countries and the European Union.
Egypt, Cyprus and Greece deemed that their future welfare relies on investing on cooperation. Greece will increase its energy efficiency, and will become a major player in the European energy arena. Cyprus will be an electricity hub in the south eastern Mediterranean and Egypt will become an important energy carrier for the European continent.
EuroAfrica Interconnector is a sound business deal for our three countries and will come to fruition in just thirty six months from the day the EuroAfrica vessel will sail from Egypt.
But most importantly this quest is a work of beauty and friendship. Aristotle said that friendship is a soul inhabiting two bodies. In our case it is three countries and the European Union. Through this project we shall develop a better understanding of our diverse
and bountiful cultures. Through our joint focus on growth we shall transmit to each other our best qualities as thinkers and doers. Through our joint investment to our prosperity we shall create
a more optimistic and joyful world for the generations to come.
I would like to thank his excellency the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Shaker, the Chairman
of the Egyptian Electricity Holding, Eng. Gaber Desouky and the Ambassador of Cyprus in Egypt his excellency Mr. Charis Moritsis.
Our next milestone meeting will be during this year when we will present the next phase of the EuroAfrica Interconnector and the studies currently underway. Until then I wish to all good health
and joyful spirits.
